The Power of Positive Affirmations

Being a mom is already a herculean task, and there’s so many tools in our mom kit that help us be the best for ourselves and our children. Some of these tools are self care, organizing with a planner, healthy meals, exercise, a daily routine, etc. Another amazing tool to incorporate into your life are ​positive affirmations​.

What is an affirmation?

I’m sure you’ve already seen Instagram posts with uber positive phrases like “Carpe diem – seize the day!” or “You got this!”. In a way, these positive phrases are affirmations. Affirmations are phrases directed at yourself that help you frame your life in a positive way, while even manifesting the results you want. Don’t forget about our little chat on manifesting.

Daily Affirmations

Positive affirmations utilize the Law of Attraction, where ideas or feelings that you continually think about and devote energy to, will come to you tenfold. For example, a personal affirmation I use is, “I have all the time and energy to do everything I need to do today”. BOOM!

This is a really powerful affirmation that I repeat to myself right when I wake up in the morning and throughout my day. By repeating the affirmation constantly, I subconsciously affirm the statement in my day to day actions. I intentionally trick myself into believing that I really do have all the time and energy I need and it prevents me from becoming overwhelmed or exhausted with my to do list. Plus, by using the framework of “…. everything I ​need ​to do today”, anything that I’m unable to get to is just something that wasn’t necessary to complete that exact day rather than a disappointment that I didn’t get to it. It’s basically giving yourself a pep talk!

Positive affirmations can be used in all areas of your life, especially the areas where you need extra TLC. Some examples of affirmations focusing on health are: “I only crave foods that nourish my body”, “I appreciate and love my body”, or “I feel healthier everyday”. If you are stressed out, as most of us moms are, some useful affirmations could be: “My doubts are eased and my worries released”, “I am more than enough”, or “I am strong and resilient”. Some specific affirmations for mothers are: “I am more than ‘just’ a mom”, “I am exactly who my kids need”, “I must take care of myself so I can take care of those I love”.

Why Are Positive Affirmations Important?

Positive affirmations are important because our brains already do so much negative thinking! When you consciously shift negative thoughts to positive thoughts, your actions follow suit and generate more happiness and peace in your life. It’s about shifting from a mindset of lack, to a mindset of growth. When we already feel like the world is against us, the least we can do is have our own backs. Affirmations rewire your thought processes to turn to inner strength and peace, rather than dwelling on the negativity. When you continually repeat these mantras to yourself, your brain cognitively turns to those new frameworks. Our brains cannot distinguish reality from belief. So if you continually repeat positive things to yourself, your brain truly believes they are happening! As a result, your brain will help you feel more in control and abundant.

Create Your Own Positive Affirmation

In order for these positive affirmations to work, there are some key things to keep in mind. Firstly, always frame the affirmation in present tense. This allows you to trick your thoughts into believing that they are reflecting the current state of your life. For instance, say “I am learning everyday” rather than “I ​was​ learning everyday”.

Secondly, feel the emotion when you repeat the affirmations. It’s easy to simply memorize a phrase, but if you tap into the emotion you’re aiming for (happiness, peace, clarity, strength) while you repeat the phrase, it will be so much more powerful. Your brain will truly believe in the affirmation, rather than only repeating an empty phrase.

Lastly, repeat the positive affirmation as much as you can. Right after waking up and right before sleeping are some of the best times, because they ensure an intentional day and night. Some people even like writing their affirmations continually in a journal, or leaving post-its with the affirmation around their bathroom or kitchen so that they constantly see it.

Creating your own positive affirmation is easy! Look online for amazing inspiration, but always edit affirmations to best fit you and your needs. Remember to use “I” statements and have fun with them. These are an amazing tool that can truly benefit you and your family’s life.

Affirmations rewire your thought processes to turn to inner strength and peace, rather than dwelling on the negativity.
